King, Sylvia (Hektoen Institute, Chicago, Ill.) and Esther Meyer. Gel diffusion technique in antigen-antibody reactions of Actinomyces species and "anaerobic diphtheroids." J. Bacteriol. 85:186-190. 1963.-The Ouchterlony agar gel diffusion test was used to establish antigenic patterns produced by Actinomyces israelii, A. bovis, and A. naeslundii, as compared with those of "anaerobic diphtheroids." The organisms studied included Actinomyces species isolated from cases of human and bovine actinomycosis, and from the normal oral cavity of human volunteers. The "anaerobic diphtheroids" were obtained from a variety of clinical conditions. A. israelii was serologically distinct from A. bovis, and A. naeslundii shared a minor component with the other two Actinomyces species. There were no cross reactions between the "anaerobic diphtheroids" and any of the Actinomyces species.

Metabolic and serologic differentiation of Actinomyces bovis and anaerobic diphtheroids.

It is frequently a difficult task to differentiate Actinomyces bovis from "anaerobic diphtheroids" of questionable pathogenicity. Diphtheroids, isolated from normal and pathological tissues, resemble A. bovis morphologically and in some cultural characteristics. These similarities and lack of suitable criteria for their definitive identification have been responsible for the errors in separatin...

Identification of Actinomyces israelii and Actinomyces naeslundii by fluorescent-antibody and agar-gel diffusion techniques.

This study was an attempt to develop a fluorescent-antibody (FA) test to differentiate Actinomyces israelii and A. naeslundii as an aid in their laboratory identification. Two strains of A. israelii (X522 and A601) and two strains of A. naeslundii (X454 and X600), which had received intensive study by several investigators, were used for the immunization of rabbits. Working titers, based on tes...

Characterization of some actinomyces-like isolates from human clinical sources: description of Varibaculum cambriensis gen nov, sp nov.

Fifteen strains of an anaerobic, catalase-negative, gram-positive diphtheroid-shaped bacterium recovered from human sources were characterized by phenotypic and molecular chemical and molecular genetic methods. The unidentified bacterium showed some resemblance to Actinomyces species and related taxa, but biochemical testing, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of whole-cell proteins, a...

A Study of the Antigens Involved in Adenovirus 12 Tumorigenesis by Immunodiffusion Techniques

The use of the agar gel diffusion technique has established the presence of three distinct antigenic reactions in the sera of Ad. 12 tumor-bearing hamsters. Only one of these antigens is directly demonstrable in the tumor. This "tumor" antigen is also formed during early stages of the infectious cycle in tissue culture cells. Other antigens present in the tumor, but only demonstrable indirectly...

Demonstration of Actinomyces and Arachnia species in cervicovaginal smears by direct staining with species-specific fluorescent-antibody conjugate.

For direct observation of microaerophilic actinomycetes by fluorescent antibody, a procedure was developed in which pepsin treatment and rhodamine conjugate of normal serum were used to reduce nonspecific staining in cervicovaginal smears. Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Arachnia propionica were observed in cervicovaginal smears from women who did use and who did not use an in...
